UL 508A-compliant industrial control panel designed by DRF Engineering for red light therapy power distribution, showcasing internal wiring and circuit components.

Project Overview

DRF Engineering Services, LLC collaborated with a client  to develop a high-efficiency, UL 508A-compliant power control system for commercial red light therapy devices. These devices, designed to support muscle recovery, joint healing, and overall wellness, required a robust and reliable power infrastructure to deliver consistent performance in professional environments.

Engineering Challenge

The client required a power system capable of delivering 7,500W to five large light panels, each comprising hundreds of red LEDs. Key challenges included:

  • Distributing high power efficiently across multiple panels without active cooling mechanisms (e.g., fans) to enhance system reliability.
  • Ensuring uninterrupted operation of remaining panels in the event of a single panel malfunction.
  • Ensuring the required power source for the system is available at commercial buildings.
  • Achieving compliance with UL 508A standards to meet safety and industry regulations, facilitating inspections by electrical authorities and insurance providers.

Solution

To address these challenges, DRF Engineering implemented the following strategies:

  • UL 508A Compliance: Designed the control panel in accordance with UL 508A standards, ensuring safety, performance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Passive Cooling Design: Engineered a system that operates without active cooling, reducing mechanical failure risks and maintenance requirements.
  • Modular Power Distribution: Developed a reliable power distribution architecture that isolates faults, allowing unaffected panels to continue operation seamlessly.
  • Advanced Control Features: Integrated power regulation, temperature monitoring, and overload protection to optimize efficiency and safeguard components.

Outcome

The finalized design was successfully handed off for manufacturing and is now entering production. The UL 508A listing ensures the system meets stringent safety and quality standards, providing confidence to inspectors, insurers, and end-users alike.
